Sushi 🍣 with Luis Mario Garcia in Monterrey from Orchata was a nice change of pace after a week in Mexico. Luis is the CEO and co-founder of Orchata which provides rapid delivery of groceries and other products from local merchants.
To say being an entrepreneur in the quick commerce space has been a roller coaster is an understatement. Over the last few years many 15 minute delivery companies raised huge sums of capital, expanded across many countries, only to contract massively or go out of business.
Luis Mario Garcia and the team at Orchata focused on driving efficiency and true product market fit before embarking on overly ambitious expansion. Today they have strong unit economics, expanded their B2B software offerings, and have stayed focused on building density in their home market.
It’s very hard to avoid FOMO as a founder in a hot space and I applaud the Orchata team for focusing on the fundamentals. Luis is also part of a group of ambitious tech founders in Monterrey (e.g., Alfonso De los Rios, Javier Aldape) that have more experience under the age of 30 than most 50 year olds.
This is Luis third startup and it’s clear when you meet him he has a thoughtfulness and discipline that comes from leading and building companies. Congrats to Luis and the Orchata team. Onward and upward!
